September 1, 2021 will forever be remembered by the University community in general and the city of Sangmelima in particular. Barely three semesters after opening its doors to Congolese and Cameroonian students, the Congo-Cameroon inter- state University witnessed the going into operation of its University Digital Development Centre.
It should be mentioned that it is the first of its kind to go operational after being connected recently to the appropriate electricity network.
The ceremony in sangmelima, presided over by the Governor of the South Region, representing the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, is a foretaste of similar events to follow in the near future in the other eight University Digital Development Centres and National Supervision Centre of the University Digital network.
Beside this solemn phase, the ceremony was an opportunity for the authorities of the Region to discover the 2nd phase of the E- National Higher Education Project launched by the Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya, the first component of which is the distribution of 500,000 computers to students from public and private universities.
After leading a guided tour of the new data centre, Professor Roger Atsa Etoundi and Technical Coordinator of the project gave an experimental lesson with the sagacity that we know him for. This phase enabled the audience to have a feel of the reality of distance learning made possible thanks to the state-of- the- art equipment of the University Digital Development Centre of the Congo-Cameroon inter-state University of Sangmelima, whose construction and equipment amounted to CFAF 2,500,000,000.
This infrastructure completes the important instrument present at the inter- state University, flagship of the cooperation between Congo and Cameroon.
As Professor Fouda Ndjodo Marcel, Coordinator of the E-National Higher Education Project pointed out, thanks to the Head of State His Excellency Paul Biya, Cameroonians can be proud of the technological developments offered by this unique centre in Africa, South of the Sahara.
This was also an opportunity for him to appreciate the healthy relationship between Cameroon and China.
The City of Sangmelima on the 1st of September 2021 has definitely entered the circle of digital cities. There is no doubt that in the years to come the “Silicon Forest” of Cameroon through the digital economy will radically transform the life of this locality, that of the South Region, that of Cameroon, that of the subregion and will thus be able to show to the world, the face of an emerging Africa.
